Subtitle issues - they show up as weird symbols

I'm watching a VOD movie, and it has built-in subtitles. But whenever someone speaks, the subtitles display as gibberish symbols (like ?@#$) instead of English. I know the video file is fine because it works for my friend. How do I fix the encoding?
