Is paying with cryptocurrency the only safe way?

Every 'good' provider I find insists on being paid in Bitcoin or Litecoin. A few accept PayPal Friends & Family. I'm terrified of being scammed out of $100 for a yearly sub. Is using crypto really the standard now? How do I protect myself?
