Difference between HLS and MPEG-TS (M2TS) stream formats?

In my Xtream Codes API settings, it asks me to choose between HLS (.m3u8) or MPEG-TS (.ts) output formats. I've always just left it on TS. Is there a reason I should switch to HLS? What's the actual difference in quality or buffering?
